Facebook thread issue

Hey guys,
I can't believe tomorrow is the big night!!! so excited=)
anyways I was going to start the facebook thread with all the participating bands, us, and the host but I'm actually not FB friends with everyone so they can't be apart of the big message. So I decided to hold off on actually doing it because I'm not sure how helpful it would be. We definitely need to figure something out at this meeting tonight because everyone keeps asking me about the back line.....
Karim the flyers look amazing by the way!
and excellent job on the myspace Morgan!!!

2 DAYS AHHH!

Okay, so just two days left! Like Kristin said, promote, promote, promote!!!

We need to start the thread ASAP. Has anyone contacted their bands about that?

We are still meeting tomorrow night so please plan on being there.

Everyone is doing such an amazin job, we should be VERY proud!

Thanks everyone!

Promotion!!

Hey guys,

Can't believe we only have 2 more days 'til the big event!!!

Just a reminder to promote to your teachers!!!!

Make them buy tickets!!  You guys saw me at the bake sale... Just use my technique lol

No, but seriously, the teachers like to go out as much as well do (to an extent), so ask all your teachers if they want to buy a ticket!!

Also, Tara was mentioning that we needed to start a thread including all the band leaders to figure out who is bringing what- as far as instruments, amps, etc.

MySpace Updates

Hey y'all-

I updated the MySpace again to include the band bios and information about the drink specials, b.good burgers, and download certificates.  Let me know if there's anything else to add.  Also, I edited some bios so they wouldn't be too long, so check them over to make sure they'll be okay with you and your band.

Kristin- I still need Ricky Duran's bio! I don't want him to be the odd one out.  I know he's still at home and all, so just email it to me as soon as you get it from him!

Jessie- I want to put that new flyer that includes info about the drink specials and such on the MySpace, but I can't upload it to photobucket as a PDF file.  Can you email me the flyer as a picture file?  I tried to change it on my computer and it ended up being too large to fit where I wanted it to on the page, but if it still doesn't work I can always figure something else out.

Karim- I remember at one of the meetings that I could make it to we discussed giving things away like that iTunes card in a raffle-like situation?  Is that what you were suggesting in your previous post and if so are we even going to do something like that?  I remember everyone coming up with some good, simple prize ideas.  I could be wrong about all this though...

I hope everyone has fun baking tonight!  I'll see if I can make it to Tara's after my class tonight, or I'll just bake something myself to bring in tomorrow.  I never heard what the exact schedule was, but I'm planning on helping out during my break from 3-5.  See y'all then!

Thanks,
Morgan Nusbaum

BE CAREFULL!

Hey guys. In the message I posted earlier (in the italic section you can forward to your bands), I typed the date for the bakesale is 12/23, when obviously it's 12/3. Be carefull, and make sure to correct it!!! Thanks.

Updates!

Hey everyone,

I hope your Thanksgiving was great! I've been looking at a few of my notes, and here are a few questions & comments I have:

Jessie: Did the SAC donate the money for the bakesale or lend it to us? Do we have to reimburse? Also, did you look into the movie passes thing?

Kristin: You mentioned in one of the e-mail messages something about another Esthema. Is that all taken care of? Also, how are you doing with the bios? Did you get mine and everyone else's? I looked again, and it's in one of the messages I sent. You have to click and expand the message though. Finally, were you able to work something out with the diversity group like you had planned?

Tex: Great job man with this food situation. I feel like I haven't told you that yet. What's the deal with the shakes? As a matter of fact, what's the deal with the whole food situation currently?

Everyone: Please log into Facebook and invite all of your friends on the event. We are all admins now so everyone reading this should be able to. It might take a little time if you have a lot of friends, but it's worth it to spread the word around. Also, log in to our MySpace account, and add as many friends as you can.

I just got my hands on a $15 iTunes card that I really don't need. Maybe we can put together a list of the things (including Jessie's free music downloads) that we can either give away or something at the show. We can decide what to do with the stuff after we know what we have to work with?

Finally, below is the message I just sent to Andy from Esthema with some details that concern the bands. You might want to forward it to your bands if you haven't let them know this information already:

Andy,

Hey man. Here are a few updates regarding the Battle of the B.E.A.T.:

We are having a bakesale on Wednesday (12/23) during the day at the Mezzanine to promote our show. We will also be playing all the bands' music in the background. Please help promote this event, for that is the first day we will have the tickets.

We are still waiting for the postcards to arrive, but you will get a bunch as soon as they are shipped.

The group decided that every band needs to have at least 100 items to sell at the merch table on the night of the show, to make things fair for everyone. We will handle merch sales, and the B.E.A.T. will collect 30%. In order to promote ticket sales, we will also be offering $1 off merch table purchases with tickets bought in advance.

Please have everyone become our MySpace friend and request an invite on our Facebook event. Help spread the word.

Finally, please e-mail all your fans and everyone you can think of, reminding them that you need their votes on the night of the show to win.

I hope all of this cool with you. Get back to me. Ttys!

Thanks everyone. Great job with everything. I can't stress that enough. See you Tuesday for our bake party! Woohooooo!!!!!!

Bake Sale

Hey everybody. I talked to Jon from B Good tonight, and he had an idea for our bake sale. He offered to donate his milk shake cart and the needed ingredients to us for the day of the bake sale. Basically the only thing we have to decide is which flavor we want. So far the options are egg nog, mango, pumpkin, chocolate, and I'm guessing vanilla and strawberry.

Update

Hey everyone!

I'm so happy we have come so far already with this. I have so many friends that I haven't seen since high school that are gonna check it out, so I'm really excited. As for tonight, I'll try as hard as possible to be there, and on time, but I have my internship today, so I can't make any promises. I know today is important, and I also known that Marty is going to be there, so again, I went through all the information we have so far, and updated the list I made a couple of weeks back. I sorted through and read up on the e-mail, the MySpace page, the blog, and my notes. Everything is current as of 5 AM this morning. Please bring copies of the below to the meeting tonight (bring a copy for Marty) and make sure all of it is current. I'll have copies, but I might not make it in time. I also sent some of the information below to Andy from Esthema. Not all of it is relevant to him, so I gave him some of it. You can just copy and paste, but please keep your bands updated. Thanks.

Meeting - Monday, 11/24

I hope everyone remembered that we are meeting this week on Monday night!

Let's meet at 6:30PM if that is okay with you. I've talked to a few of you, and that seems to be the best time. Karim, I know you have a bit of a conflict, but I think you said that 6:30 may be okay? I hope I remember that correctly.

Anyway, Marty is going to be there so please be on time and ready !

Thanks everyone.

Hey Everyone!

I've been playing around with the myspace lately making it look nice and adding pictures and such.  If you haven't seen it lately definitely check it out!  Just be aware if y'all make any changes-the codes are really easy to accidently mess up...I know from experience!  If anything gets changed and you can't fix it let me know and I'll give it a try.  Tara and I hung up LOADS of flyers in 921 on Thursday...and I'm going to print out some color ones to hang up either early next week or after we get back from the break.  I'm getting so excited!

Hi everyone-

I am meeting with Lionel from Bill's Bar on Saturday to finalize a bunch of details. As soon as we do that, he will put in the ticket order and we will have them ASAP, hopefully by Monday, December 1! Also, we are ordering the fliers this weekend, so we will have them for the bake sale. Tex, tell your friend to save us those bagels!! I'll give you the money on Monday.

Remember- meeting has been moved to Monday, November 24. Marty will be there so attendance and being on time is a must!!! I will let you know where we will meet that day, as I have to figure it out with Student Activities to see which room we can get.

The night of, it's doors at 8PM and the first band is on at 8:30PM. Bill's doesn't have a backline so alert your bands that they need to bring their stuff.

Thanks Tara & Morgan for hanging up so many fliers!!!! Everyone please follow their lead, we need to spread the word. Our potential gross is HUGE. We HAVE to fill the room on the 10th! We can do it!

Tex, can B. Good wait until after the bake sale to see what kind of funds we have? If not, I'll front it, but let me know.

Kristin, amazing job with getting Joy!! She's going to be great!

Also, everyone who is working on the MySpace, thank you so much. It looks awesome and Bill's is putting our link up on their page tonight.

I hope everyone has a good night and I'll let you know what happens after I meet with Lionel on Saturday.

Thanks again!

Flier #1

Hi Everyone-

Please check the gmail account to print out copies of the first flier. It's very vague, but I think it's attention grabbing, and will get people wondering. Let me know what you think. Karim's friend did the text, and I added the bass drum.

Please print as many as you can and begin hanging them around the school. Tara and I have the responsibility for this week, but the more fliers we can get up, the better.

Thanks.
That's AWESOME Tex!! Thank you!

I'm going to try and get a definite number for the budget by tomorrow. I'll let you know ASAP

To everyone else:

If you haven't gotten your artist song, bio, and pic into the GMAIL account yet, please do it. Thank you if you already have. We need to get this together.

Thanks again.

Here's the response I got from Jon Olinto from B Good:

Thanks a lot for the email. We'd love to help you guys with BEAT.

Send me over whatever you guys have for a budget and the number of those
early comers you anticipate.

I know we'll figure out a way to get plenty of burgers there the 10th.

Let me know when you can.

Thanks,
Jon

If somebody could get back to me about our budget or if the GAP donation came through, I'll get back to him ASAP.

B Good

Hey everyone. Since we were talking about offering free food as an incentive to get to the show early, I was thinking instead of just trying to get free/discounted pizza, we could try working something out with B Good since one of their founders just spoke on the entrepreneur panel and knows our organization. I wrote Marty an email to try to get his contact info, so I'll let you know if that works out.

Ricky Duran myspace link

http://www.myspace.com/wwwmyspacecomrickyduran

don't tell me why he made this his link, but this is it lol.

Also, Ricky informed me that he will be able to get 100 albums to sell at the show!

I have made the myspace and my friend Jordan is creating the cool background and all that good stuff tonight, so once he's finished I'll let you know.

Karim, did your friend make a logo yet (for the b.e.a.t.)?

Enjoy!

Ricky Duran update

Hey guys,

I met with Ricky Duran (band) yesterday, and I'd say we got some things accomplished.  They are going to give me their demo, and figure out how many albums they can provide for sell on the night of the show.  Fortunately, they do have promo pics!!  They will have their myspace up on Friday too.  I will send you all the link asap when it's up and running.

Also, I will have the myspace up by the end of the week.  I'll e-mail everyone the user name/password as soon as it's done.

Myspace page/Flyer

Hey everyone:

So my friend Jordan is willing to make the flyers (for free) for the Battle of the Bands.  However, since we are now not sure of which bands will actually be playing, it's hard for me to make the myspace or the flyers...

Thanks for the update on SuperVolcano TC

Jessie, what's going on with Model Cars?  Are they a definitely yes?

I will see all of you guys tomorrow,

issue with supervolcano

hey guys i just wanted to keep everyone posted with whats going on....a few hours after the meeting on Tuesday, I discovered that Supervolcano is beginning to get involved with Heavy Rotation Records. While they aren't signed to HRR yet, they have submitted songs for the HRR showcase in Feburary and are booked to do a free show a Cafe 939 on November 14.
I just want to know everyone's thoughts on this.....I know one of our rules for these bands was that they couldn't be signed to HRR and while technically Supervolcano isn't, they are beginning to get involved.
Last night i met up with 3/4 of the band and they are all still very interested in doing the battle of the bands with us.

Also, I talked to Phil and he gave me numerous resources as far as merchandise companies and am in the process of contacting them all. i'll keep you updated

Battle of the B.E.A.T.

Hi Everyone-

Excellent meeting today! I feel like we are finally getting everything together. It's exciting! Thanks for thinking up an awesome name, Karim.

Tex, Brian Dunne sounds great, I'm glad he agreed to play. I think he's a nice addition to our lineup. I'm sorry I forgot to mention your studio tonight at the meeting. Thank you for the offer, that is definitely an option that we should consider!

Kristin, when you set up the MySpace can you please put all of the log in info up on here? Thanks for offering to do that, too! =) Let us know when you speak to your flier friend.

Tara, let us know about Philip's t-shirt deal!

Nicky, can you let us know when you confirm Johnny?

Middle East just called me and told me that we can have the room December 9 or 10. It's a bit to late, as we are now confirmed with Bill's. Bummer! I think Bill's is a good spot, though. It's more convenient, which is a huge factor (especially in the winter!!).

FYI: Tomorrow night is the Music Business Orientation, and it would be great it you could all make it out. It is at 6PM in David Friend Recital Hall, and I will be speaking about the B.E.A.T.. Please try and make it if you can (I know it's tought with MidTerms). It's important that we show a strong presence within the Music Business Department, and I let Marty know those of you who were there at last week's event- he was very grateful and happy!

Thanks again.

Jessie

Brian Dunne

Hey everyone. I told Cougar in the Workplace that they are off the bill and already got ahold of Brian Dunne. He said he'd love to play. In all honesty, he's probably a better act for a battle of the bands anyway.

If you're interested, you can check out his music, pictures, etc. at www.myspace.com/briandunnemusic.

Sunday, October 26, 2008

hey guys
it's going to be really hard choosing the bands! I talked to Jonathan Carr a couple days ago and he's is very interested in the battle of the bands....his myspace page is www.myspace.com/jonathancarr88    check his it out.....he's also doing a cafe show on Tuesday night if anyone is interested in going.... it should be good.

Also I have confirmed every member of Supervolcano finally lol.
their myspace is www.myspace.com/superdupervolcano
for anyone who hasn't heard their music or wants to hear more

I have contacted a few members of the BIRN to see if they are interested in possibly hosting our show as well as having the bands be interviewed on a show....i'll keep everyone posted with that.

as far as a name for this event i have no idea....did anyone come up with anything?? once we have a name and location we can start promoting this to berklee and hopefully other schools
TC
Hey guys,

Ok, so i just got a response from Scott (the alumnus I was telling you about) last night. I asked him for pretty much any help and advice that he could give us on a group and individual basis. Below is the the response he gave me. I think there are some good ideas in here, and we should benefit a lot. Also, maybe Jessie can add him to the blog, so he can give us some more feedback along the way (scott@bostonrockacademy.com).

Karim -

Glad my presentation was helpful. Occasionally I say something worthwhile, I guess.

And, glad you like Bandzoogle. It really is a good product that more musicians should know about. But then, that's my job ...

For the BEAT project, a few things come to mind. Battle of the Band (BotB) style events are pretty common. So the obvious advice would be to make yours stand-out or be different. Traditional "gimmicks" include getting guest/celebrity judges, cool sponsors/prizes, and so on ...

Since you're short on cash, my suggestion would be to see if money spent on the event could count as some sort of non-profit (deductible) donation. Have the entire event benefit some relevant charity that has a tie-in to Berklee or some relevant music issue. A quick suggestion would be MusicCares. They're the Grammy charity. Maybe they could help you with a judge, or a cool prize...

Alternately, check with Berklee alum and kajillionaire, Ernie Boch. His"Music Drives Us" foundation gives out grants to worthy causes. He's also good for a prize, as would (probably) Mike Dreese (Newbury Comics, CEO).

If the bands are all Berklee students, see if you can get a cool campus based prize. Maybe a $500 scholarship? Lunch with Roger Brown?

Also - try and make a big prize out of a lot of smaller prizes. For example, $10 from Subway, $10 from Starbucks, $10 gas card, and you've got a Musician's Post Gig Survival Kit. It's cheesy, but each piece is pretty easy to get, and together they're kinda cool.

Anyone that donates a prize will want/expect some kind of publicity. Make sure you get their name and logo splashed across anything and everything.

For promotion - first off, identify your audience. If the bands are all made up of Berklee students, then are non-Berklee folks interested? Also -if you get sponsors (like those listed above), do they have mailing list that they can send your message out to?

Reach out via Twitter. Free, easy searches, etc. Take a little work to generate a solid list, but the response rate is surprisingly strong.

If you have (some) cash, here's a couple suggestions:
Postcards: 5,000 4x6 cards are $137.00 from www.flyerstudios.com
Posters: 300 11x17 posters, $60.00 from nimbit

Get something slick, and pass out/post all around town. Get the band's name/photos on there, and give some to the bands to help promote. It's in their best interest to bring their fans. Traditional BotBs will have judges plus an audience vote which counts toward picking the winner.

Lastly, and this is probably impossible, but booze is a big draw. If you're crowd is 21+, offer cheap beer. Works every time ... and it's a solid profit margin.

That's all that comes to mind ... if I think of anything else, I'll let you know. And if you have questions, send 'em through ...

Studio

Hey Jessie. I have a home recording studio that I started last fall. I don't know what the details surrounding the winning band's prize are, but if ya'll want to consider my studio, I'm open to the idea. You can check out the myspace at www.myspace.com/renaissancerecordings for sample recordings. I should have new ones up early next month.
Hi!

Last night's 'Evening with Entrepreneurs' was fantastic! Thanks to those who made it out (Tara, Morgan, & Tex). Karim and I had dinner with the panel before the event began and were informing Music Business Professor, Joe Miglio, about our current project. He was very interested and offered to help and guide us in any way that he can. I suggested that he check out this blog! So, if anyone has any questions that Joe may be able to help out with, please post them. I'd like to create a few concrete questions for him at our meeting on Tuesday, he is so generous to offer his help, and as budding entrepreneurs, it's important for us to take advantage of sound advice when we are offered it.

Kristin, see if Ricky Duran can create a MySpace asap. If he cannot, and you are committed to taking him on as your project, offer to do it for him. Also, we may have to make it 6 bands (I'm aware that is a lot), because Karim and Tex were very proactive and reached out to their prospective bands immediately after we met on Tuesday and both bands were interested. I think six is fine, we can pull it off, and it will create more of a space between each instrumental band.

Also- let's make a list of possible studios that could provide us with studio time to award our winning band with. Please post them on here, and let's keep it as close to campus as possible.

Thanks to all who are contributing!

-Jessie

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Hello All:

Last night I went to a show at Bill's Bar with a group of friends (including Tara, Jessie, and Morgan) and there was one band in particular that I really enjoyed.  Immediately all three of us knew we should consider this band for the Battle of the Bands.

The front-man is Ricky Duran- a 3rd semester student.  I'm not sure of the names of the bass player and drummer, but I'll get that info asap.

They also don't have a myspace yet, since they're fairly new, but they stated they had an album coming out soon.

I will talk to Ricky and see if I can get some recordings to play for you guys at the next meeting!!

See you all next week!

-Kristin
Hey Everyone-

To my disappointment, I wasn't thinking and scheduled a class during the time that the B.E.A.T regularly meets this semester.  However, I've made it clear to Jessie that I still want to be involved, and I'll definitely be helping out with the event!  The blog is a great way for me to see updates and what the club is working on.  Good luck guys- I miss everyone!

Morgan

'Evening for Entrepreneurs'

Hey Everyone-

Great meeting last night!

Karim, let us know when you get a quote for t-shirts.

Let's start contributing some names! We obviously want them to be catchy, to the point, and memorable. The sooner we have one, the better!

I've been thinking about our band line-up, and I am not sure if it's a good idea to have two instrumental-only bands. Facts are facts- and most people are drawn to band's that are fronted by singers. It would be a good idea for us to really think about this, I think that we should probably drop one.

Tonight is the 'Evening for Entrepreneurs', 6:30PM in David Friend Recital Hall. I need you all to make the effort to be there.

Thanks!

Jessie

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Hey guys,

I really apologize for missing our last meeting. I had way too much work to do for the next day, and I don't live that close to campus. Anyhow, I hope to be seeing all of you this coming Tuesday night. In the meantime, here is some information I would like you to look through:

1. I have two candidates that I am considering for our project. One of them is a Berklee freshman. Since I am a Peer Advisor, I figured why not ask my advisees, since most of them are new to Boston anyway, and naturally wouldn't have much of a reputation in MA. Here is what Eitan, the interested advisee has to say about himself: " I am a hard working singer/songwriter who strives to sing about things of interest and substance. Although I have played a few gigs and made a couple recordings I never really could figure out how to break into the music scene. I'm a first semester student and I am a good distance from home. I really want to play for people and spread the music I have worked so hard to create but I do not have the marketing resources to do so. I believe I have a promotable talent but I just can't seem to market it myself." I think he would be a great option. If not, I have been working with one of my friends in Arlington, and he doesn't go to Berklee. I can attest that he has no recordings, because we're working together to get his first one done. Also, he has very little performace history, for he has only played with a few cover bands at a few weddings. He also has no online presence. Either one you vote on works for me!!!

2. Although it feels a bit weird sponsoring another group's event, M.E.I.S.A. is throwing a Music Business Autumn Affair, with a guest speaker. It will be on Wednesday October 29th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at David Friend Recital Hall. It might be worth checking out as a group. We might be able to connect with some other Business majors, and get some insight for our project. I also spoke with one of their directors, and he invited us to go with them on their NY trip to visit a few companies. We agreed I'd run it by you and give him exact information on who wants to go if we decided we were interested.

3. Don't forget to check out the Evening with Entrepreneurs panel on Wednesday the 22nd, at 6:30 PM at David Friend Recital Hall.

4. What do you guys think about working on a website for B.E.A.T. that would have information about the show as well?

I believe that's all for now, but I'll be back with more soon!!!

the B.E.A.T.

Hey guys!

Welcome to the B.E.A.T.'s official blog. I hope that you all contribute your ideas and thoughts, so that we can stay better connected throughout the week.

For tonight's meeting, you should be bringing in a few candidates for our band competition, make sure you have the following info...

-Performing History
-Online Presence
-Released/Recorded Music
-Fan Base
-Background
-Viability

We need 5 bands to make this happen, so let's get the best that we can find!

See you all tonight, 6:00PM 136 Mass Ave. Rm 301
